William Herbert Dunton

William Herbert "Buck" Dunton (1878–1936) was an American painter and illustrator renowned for his vivid portrayals of the American West. Born near Augusta, Maine, Dunton developed a deep connection to the outdoors early in life, often accompanying his grandfather on hunting and fishing trips. By age sixteen, he was selling illustrations to local newspapers, which led him to pursue formal art education at the Cowles Art School in Boston and later at the Art Students League in New York City. His experiences as a ranch hand and cowboy in the West provided authentic insights that enriched his artistic depictions of frontier life.
In 1912, encouraged by fellow artist Ernest Blumenschein, Dunton visited Taos, New Mexico, and was captivated by its landscapes and cultures. He became a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915, dedicating his work to capturing the essence of the fading Old West. Dunton's paintings often featured cowboys, hunters, and wildlife, rendered with meticulous detail and a deep sense of narrative. His unwavering commitment to authenticity and firsthand experiences distinguished his work from his contemporaries and ignited a passion for Western art in many.
Throughout his career, Dunton's work was exhibited nationally and acclaimed for its portrayal of Western themes. Despite declining health in his later years, he continued creating lithographs and murals under the Public Works of Art Project during the Great Depression. Dunton passed away in Taos in 1936, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence and inspire Western art enthusiasts, ensuring his impact on the art world endures.
