Juan Flores

Juan (John) Flores, born in New York in 1950, is a self-taught artist whose work reflects a unique perspective shaped by a lifelong connection to the ocean and coastal environments. At the age of four, his family relocated to Venezuela, where he became one of the country's earliest surfers, immersing himself in activities like surfing, swimming, and diving in the warm waters of the Caribbean. This early bond with the sea profoundly influenced his artistic vision, which often centers on seascapes, surf culture, and allegorical imagery.

Flores pursued architectural design and urbanism studies at Universidad Simón Bolívar in Venezuela. He later returned to the United States to earn a Master's in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley, he contributed to the Environmental Simulation Laboratory, where he developed the 'solar fan' concept. In simple terms, this concept is a design that uses the sun's energy to create a comfortable environment in urban spaces, earning recognition from the American Planning Association.

After retiring from a successful career in urban planning and land use consulting, Flores wholeheartedly dedicated himself to his true passion for painting. Settling in Encinitas, California, he began creating detailed works that capture the essence of coastal life. His painting "La Libertad" exemplifies his meticulous approach, often taking weeks to complete a single piece. In 2022, his work was featured in New American Paintings Issue #157, highlighting his emergence in the contemporary art scene.
