Cassius Marcellus Coolidge

Cassius Marcellus Coolidge was an American artist born on September 18, 1844, in Antwerp, New York. Raised in a Quaker family of abolitionist farmers, he had little formal art training but displayed a natural talent for drawing from an early age. Coolidge pursued various careers throughout his life, including roles as a druggist, sign painter, newspaper founder, and bank manager. He also patented the "comic foreground," a novelty photo backdrop that allowed people to insert their faces into humorous painted scenes—a concept remains popular at fairs and amusement parks today.

Coolidge is best known for his iconic "Dogs Playing Poker" series, which he began in 1894 with the painting Poker Game. In 1903, he was commissioned by the advertising firm Brown & Bigelow to create a series of sixteen oil paintings featuring anthropomorphic dogs engaged in various human activities, including nine that depict poker games. These works, such as A Friend in Need and A Bold Bluff, were initially used to promote cigars but have since become enduring symbols of American kitsch art. Their humorous portrayal of dogs in human scenarios has captivated audiences for generations and brought a sense of joy and amusement to the art world.

Despite his widespread popularity, Coolidge's work was often dismissed by art critics during his lifetime. Nevertheless, his paintings have achieved significant recognition in the art market; for instance, Poker Game sold for $658,000 at a Sotheby's auction in 2015. Coolidge passed away on January 13, 1934, in Staten Island, New York, but his legacy endures. His whimsical depictions of dogs engaged in human activities continue to captivate and entertain the public, securing his place in the annals of American popular culture.
