    Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau, a French painter born in Laval in 1844, is a testament to the power of perseverance. Despite lacking formal training, Rousseau relentlessly pursued his passion for art while juggling various jobs, including a role as a customs officer in Paris, which earned him the moniker' Le Douanier' or 'the customs agent.' It was not until his early forties that he began to paint seriously, creating works that defied the academic traditions of the time with their bold colors, simplified forms, and fantastical subject matter.
Rousseau's paintings often featured lush, exotic landscapes filled with wild animals. However, he never left France and based his scenes on visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and his own vivid imagination. His unique style, sometimes described as naïve or primitive, was initially ridiculed by critics but later admired by avant-garde artists such as Pablo Picasso and the Surrealists. Works like "The Sleeping Gypsy" and "The Dream" showcase his ability to create otherworldly atmospheres that blend innocence with mystery and wonder.
Throughout his life, Rousseau remained somewhat isolated from the mainstream art world, but his originality and vision ultimately earned him posthumous recognition as a major influence on modern art. He passed away in 1910, largely uncelebrated in his own time, but his work went on to inspire generations of artists with its sincerity, imaginative power, and bold defiance of conventional artistic norms. Today, Henri Rousseau is celebrated as one of the most important self-taught artists in the history of Western art, a testament to the evolution of his reputation from obscurity to acclaim.
