Ole Peter Hansen Balling

Ole Peter Hansen Balling (1823–1906) was a Norwegian painter renowned for his masterful portraits of military leaders, statesmen, and royalty across Europe and the Americas. Born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway, Balling trained under Norwegian artist Ferdinand Jonas Gjøs and Danish decorative painter Jacob Emilius Wunderlich. He furthered his studies at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and in 1854, he studied with Thomas Couture in Paris. His early career was marked by participation in the First Schleswig-Holstein War as a Danish officer, an experience that influenced his later military-themed artworks.
In 1856, Balling emigrated to the United States, where he lived until 1874. During the American Civil War, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the 145th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His artistic talents flourished as he painted portraits of prominent Union generals, including Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, John Sedgwick, and James S. Wadsworth. He also captured the likenesses of significant American figures such as abolitionist John Brown and Presidents Chester A. Arthur and James A. Garfield. His works from this period are notable for their historical significance and are featured in institutions like the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
After returning to Norway in 1874, Balling established a workshop in Horten, where he painted portraits of Norwegian naval officers and members of the Royal Bernadotte family, including Kings Charles XIV John, Oscar I, Charles XV, and Oscar II of Sweden. Between 1881 and 1890, he lived and worked in Mexico City, later serving as the Mexican consul in Kristiania. Balling's legacy endures through his contributions to portraiture, with works housed in esteemed collections such as the West Point Military Academy, the United States Naval Academy, and the National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design in Oslo.

Orders outside the U.S. are not eligible for Free Shipping. Please choose your paid shipping method during checkout. We offer DHL, UPS, and USPS Priority Mail for international shipments.

Customs and Import Duties: If your puzzles are being delivered outside the USA, your order may be subject to import fees. These are stipulated by each individual country and are not collected or remitted by Nautilus Puzzles. Unfortunately, as we cannot advise you on the amount of these fees, we recommend contacting your country’s customs office or tax agent for the respective rates.

Returns - Peace of Mind Guaranteed: If you are less than delighted with your new puzzle, you can return it to us within 30 days of receiving your order for a full refund or store credit. We ask that it be unused and in its original condition and packaging (shrink-wrap not removed).

If you contact us in advance, we can email you a prepaid shipping label that you can print and affix to your return. To request this label, simply provide your order number and reason for return to our customer service team at help@nautiluspuzzles.com. Shipping costs will be deducted from your refund/credit, but they are charged at our volume discount shipping rates rather than the standard retail rate.

Please note we can only accept custom puzzles for return or refund if there are quality issues, as these items have been produced specifically for you.
