Stephen Morath

Stephen Morath, born in 1954 in Colorado Springs, is an American painter celebrated for his vibrant, narrative-rich depictions of the American Southwest. After studying at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and earning a BFA from Tufts University in 1979, Morath returned to Colorado, where he has lived and worked as a full-time artist since 1984. His paintings are characterized by a blend of realism and stylized, cartoon-like elements, often infused with humor. This humor, along with a touch of nostalgia, entertains and creates an emotional connection with the viewer. Morath's work captures the essence of Southwestern landscapes, incorporating motifs such as vintage cars, roadside attractions, and desert flora, reflecting his deep appreciation for the region's unique culture and scenery.

Morath's artistic process involves creating detailed sketches and drawings, often based on real-life observations and photographs, which he then translates into acrylic paintings on canvas. His choice of acrylic as his primary medium allows him to achieve vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail for which his compositions are known. This medium also enables him to bring to life scenes that celebrate the quirky charm of the Southwest. In addition to landscapes, Morath has explored still-life paintings, focusing on fruits and vegetables inspired by his own gardening experiences. These works showcase his ability to find beauty and interest in everyday subjects, rendered with the same care and vividness as his larger compositions.

Throughout his career, Morath has exhibited his work extensively, with a significant presence in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he has shown continuously since 1984. His exhibitions have not only been well-received but have also significantly influenced the American Southwest art scene, drawing praise for his unique blend of realism and stylized, cartoon-like elements and his ability to capture the region's essence. His paintings are also part of public collections, including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the Albuquerque Museum of Art. Morath continues to live and work in Colorado, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultures surrounding him. He remains dedicated to capturing the spirit of the American Southwest through his distinctive artistic lens.

Orders outside the U.S. are not eligible for Free Shipping. Please choose your paid shipping method during checkout. We offer DHL, UPS, and USPS Priority Mail for international shipments.

Customs and Import Duties: If your puzzles are being delivered outside the USA, your order may be subject to import fees. These are stipulated by each individual country and are not collected or remitted by Nautilus Puzzles. Unfortunately, as we cannot advise you on the amount of these fees, we recommend contacting your country’s customs office or tax agent for the respective rates.

Returns - Peace of Mind Guaranteed: If you are less than delighted with your new puzzle, you can return it to us within 30 days of receiving your order for a full refund or store credit. We ask that it be unused and in its original condition and packaging (shrink-wrap not removed).

If you contact us in advance, we can email you a prepaid shipping label that you can print and affix to your return. To request this label, simply provide your order number and reason for return to our customer service team at help@nautiluspuzzles.com. Shipping costs will be deducted from your refund/credit, but they are charged at our volume discount shipping rates rather than the standard retail rate.

Please note we can only accept custom puzzles for return or refund if there are quality issues, as these items have been produced specifically for you.
