Few sights illustrate the grandeur of the Clydesdales quite like a fully assembled hitch: eight magnificent horses, polished harness gleaming against rich bay coats, white feathering sweeping above enormous hooves. Associated with the beloved horses at Grant’s Farm in St. Louis, this striking team turns the practical business of pulling a wagon into a moving pageant. Broad chests and powerful shoulders convey tremendous strength, while the measured rhythm of their steps gives that strength an unexpected elegance. With the familiar red Budweiser wagon behind them, the horses evoke an earlier age, when hoofbeats set the pace of a journey. It makes for a stunning horse puzzle.

Yet their imposing size explains only part of why people love Clydesdales so much. Their gentleness makes an equally lasting impression. At Grant’s Farm, visitors can discover that quieter charm through encounters that include petting and grooming a Clydesdale while learning about its care and training. Up close, attention moves from the sweep of a muscular neck to smaller details: an inquisitive ear, a soft muzzle, the patient acceptance of a human hand. There is something powerfully affecting about standing beside an animal capable of such effort and finding it calmly willing to share a moment with you.

The hitch adds one more layer to that affection: the pleasure of watching individuals work beautifully together. Each horse adds to a shared rhythm, each deliberate stride helping carry the whole team forward. For many admirers, the Clydesdales also summon memories of parades, holiday commercials, and childhood outings, giving their appearance the affection of a familiar tradition. At Grant’s Farm, that affection has a living, breathing presence. Whether admired for their flowing feathering, their patient nature, or the spectacle of the team in motion, these horses invite people to pause—and often leave them smiling widely after the hoofbeats have faded.
The perfect gift for horse lovers and Christmas Puzzle fans, this traditional horse puzzle can be done time and again. Don Langeneckert

Don Langeneckert was an accomplished American artist and illustrator celebrated for his nostalgic paintings, remarkable attention to detail, and heartfelt depictions of American life. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1927, he developed a lifelong passion for art, studying at Washington University's School of Fine Arts after serving in the U.S. Army. His professional career began in commercial illustration, where he created artwork for prominent companies, including Anheuser-Busch, Purina, Monsanto, and Falstaff Brewing. His talent for capturing the character and beauty of everyday scenes helped establish a successful career  spanning several decades. With a distinctive style reminiscent of classic American illustration, Langeneckert brought warmth, personality, and storytelling to his paintings.

Throughout his artistic career, Langeneckert found inspiration in the landscapes, traditions, and familiar places of his beloved Missouri, as well as the enduring  spirit of the American West. Horses became one of his favorite subjects, particularly the magnificent Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales, which he portrayed with extraordinary detail and an appreciation for their strength and grace. His diverse portfolio also featured bustling St. Louis street scenes, historic landmarks, rural landscapes, rodeos, steamboats, and peaceful moments in nature. Combining careful observation with artistic imagination, he frequently worked from photographs and reference materials, thoughtfully bringing together elements to create beautifully composed scenes filled with life and character.

Langeneckert's artwork reflects a deep appreciation for history, tradition, and the simple pleasures of everyday life. His paintings invite viewers to revisit cherished memories, discover the charm of earlier generations, and appreciate the timeless beauty of the American landscape. Whether illustrating a team of Clydesdales traveling through a snowy countryside or capturing the lively atmosphere of a neighborhood gathering place, his work conveys a wonderful sense of nostalgia and connection. In 2023, Kodner Gallery in St. Louis honored his artistic legacy with St. Louis Illustrated, an exhibition featuring more than 40 of his works. Through his richly detailed paintings and enduring dedication to his craft, Don Langeneckert left behind a treasured collection of artwork that continues to celebrate the places, people, and traditions he loved.
