    Currier & Ives

Currier & Ives, a prolific American printmaking firm, was founded by Nathaniel Currier in 1834 and later joined by James Merritt Ives in 1857. Based in New York City, the company specialized in lithographs that captured scenes of American life, making art accessible to the general public. Their prints, often described as 'the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints,' covered various subjects, from landscapes and historical events to domestic scenes and holiday traditions, offering a vivid pictorial record of nineteenth-century America.
Currier & Ives' distinctive style combined detailed illustration with a sense of narrative and sentimentality, making their prints accessible and deeply emotionally resonant. They employed a team of skilled artists and lithographers to produce hand-colored prints in large quantities, ensuring wide distribution across the United States. Their work highlighted the nation's ideals, everyday life, and rapid expansion, capturing the imagination of a broad audience and becoming deeply ingrained in the visual culture of the time.
Currier & Ives continued to operate successfully until the late nineteenth century, closing in 1907 as changing tastes and new printing technologies emerged. However, their legacy endures, with their images remaining iconic representations of American life in the 1800s. Today, their lithographs are highly collectible and celebrated for their historical significance and artistic craftsmanship, offering a nostalgic glimpse into a formative period of American history.
