Since it was published in 1865, Lewis Carroll's iconic Alice books have been a pivotal influence on novelists, songwriters, composers, and artists.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland takes us to a world populated by talking animals who pose questions of logic and behave in ways that make 7-year-old Alice question the sanity of it all. Carroll wrote a sequel in 1871 as Alice Through the Looking-Glass

Over the years, the books have inspired some famous musical compositions, both contemporary and classical.

Here are a few to look out for.

White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane: Written by Grace Slick, the lyrics borrow extensively from Lewis Carroll's works but use them as a metaphor for mind-altering drugs.

I am the Walrus by the Beatles: John Lennon used Lewis Carroll's poem The Walrus and the Carpenter, from Through the Looking-Glass, as the basis for the title and the narrative for the apparently nonsense scenarios that pepper the song.

Alice by Tom Waits: In 2002, Waits released the album Alice from an opera production first staged in 1992, which explored the relationship between Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddle, the little girl who inspired his books.

Alice also inspired composers to create operas. Some of the most famous are by Unsuk Chin and Will Todd.

Ballets - By Przemysław Zych, Carl David, Alexander Rosenblatt, Herbert Baumann.

And symphonies - Louis de Bernières, Deems Taylor, Alfred Reynolds, and many others.

One of the most famous modern composers fascinated with Alice was the American composer David Del Tredici.

His inspiration lasted for 25 years, from his first work, Pop-Pourri, in 1968, through Vintage Alice, Final Alice, An Alice Symphony, Adventures Underground, Child Alice, and Heavy Metal Alice.

His song, 'In Memory of a Summer Day,' part of the Child Alice cycle, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1980.

Alice provided a wealth of inspiration for composers and songwriters from the 19th to the 21st century. We hope this lovely musical Alice puzzle inspires you.
