Annapolis, the capital of Maryland, holds a brief but significant chapter in the history of the United States. It served as the nation's capital from November 1783 to August 1784, and it was the site where the Treaty of Paris, marking the end of the Revolutionary War, was signed. This is also where George Washington, the first President of the United States, resigned at the end of that war, a momentous event in American history.

When the Puritans settled it in 1649, the city was originally called 'Providence.' As the city grew and developed, it became a bustling shipping port. In 1708, the city was officially chartered and renamed after Queen Anne, the reigning monarch at the time. Her royal badge, with a crown over the entwined thistle of Scotland and Tudor rose of England, is depicted on the Annapolis flag, symbolizing the city's rich history and diverse influences.

Stepping into Annapolis is like stepping back in time. The oldest incorporated city in the state is a living museum with more 18th-century buildings than anywhere else in the USA. The historic district, spanning 45 blocks, is a testament to the city's rich cultural and architectural heritage, inviting visitors to appreciate and respect its history.

For many, Annapolis is synonymous with the United States Naval Academy, symbolizing the nation's maritime strength and pride. Founded in 1845, the academy is located on the Severn River, a strategic waterway that meets the Chesapeake Bay, further reinforcing Annapolis's connection to the sea and the nation's naval history.

Although it eventually lost out on the shipping trade to a much deeper harbor in Baltimore, Annapolis's position on the Chesapeake still makes it popular with international sailors. Recreational boating, fishing, sailing, and racing are activities that take place year-round, and it is a beautiful place to sail.

The Italian artist Guido Borelli painted this colorful image of the city dock with the statehouse in the background. It makes for a relaxing wooden jigsaw puzzle and will have you longing to get in a boat.
