For centuries, people have looked to the sun, moon, and stars to tell time and understand the natural world. The sun provides us with light and warmth, setting the pattern for day and night, as well as the changing seasons. The moon, shining by reflecting sunlight, moves through its own monthly cycle, shaping calendars, tides, and traditions. These patterns help maintain a steady and familiar life on Earth.

The moon orbits Earth and is connected to the Sun and the stars. Its different shapes, called phases, happen because the moon lines up differently with the sun as it moves. The stars remain in the same place, so we use them as markers to observe the moon's travel across the night sky. Long ago, people used these sky patterns not only to help them find their way but also to determine when to plant and harvest crops, recognizing how the sun, moon, and stars influence life every day.

We see the sun, moon, and stars interact during rare eclipses. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, darkening the day. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon. These show how their movements fit together. They remind us that Earth is part of a much bigger system, with each part playing a role in our lives.

This lovely image from Maria Matos illustrates the interaction between them all, making for a really colorful and entertaining puzzle.

Maria Matos

Maria Matos is a talented watercolor artist whose work draws on the delicate interplay between light, color, and nature. Born and raised in Lisbon, Portugal, Maria’s artistic journey began at an early age, inspired by the rich landscapes and vibrant cultural history of her homeland. After studying fine arts at the University of Lisbon, she honed her skills in watercolor, a medium that allows her to explore the subtle nuances of emotion and atmosphere. Her paintings are characterized by their fluidity, capturing the ephemeral beauty of everyday moments with a unique sense of intimacy.

Maria's work often reflects her deep connection to the natural world. From sweeping coastal scenes to the quiet serenity of botanical studies, she seeks to evoke a sense of peace and mindfulness through her use of soft washes and transparent layers. Her color palette, which ranges from warm earth tones to cool, tranquil blues, mirrors her desire to capture the fleeting beauty of light and shadow. The artist’s ability to depict both the softness and vibrancy of nature allows her to create work that resonates with viewers on a personal level.

Throughout her career, Maria has exhibited her work in galleries across Europe and the United States, earning recognition for her mastery of technique and her emotive, thought-provoking compositions. Each piece she creates is a meditation on the passage of time, a visual poem that invites the viewer to pause and reflect. Maria continues to explore new subjects and techniques in her watercolor practice, ever inspired by the world around her and the endless possibilities of her medium.
