There's something magical about seeing a dragonfly darting between the flowers on a spring or summer day. They are a pretty aerial specialist with their jewel-like colors and ability to fly backward.

The dragonfly is one of the oldest insect species. They also represent air and water since their larvae often hatch out of water. In many tales, they symbolize wisdom, communications from the elements, adaptation, insight, and transformations.

There are many superstitions about dragonflies in different cultures.

Seeing swarms of dragonflies mean rain is on the way.

Fishermen used them as an indicator of good fishing grounds. Plenty of dragonflies meant there was plenty of fish around. If a dragonfly hovered near the fisherman, he took it as a good luck sign.

If a dragonfly lands on you, you'll hear good news from someone you care about.

In Japan, dragonflies bring good fortune. One name for Japan is  Akitsushima - 'The Island of the Dragonfly.' Its curved shape is believed to resemble a dragonfly at rest.

In China, they represent harmony, good luck, and prosperity. The Chinese believe that the dragonfly is the soul of a dragon.

Native American folklore also suggests that dragonflies were originally dragons. However, a coyote tricked a dragon into shapeshifting, and it couldn't change back. As a result, the dragonfly symbolizes change, speed, and illusion.

Navajo sand paintings and Zuni pottery with decorative dragonflies have been found in the Southwest. People would depict dragonflies to ensure good rain and symbolize more water in these otherwise dry areas.

Celtic mythology speaks of the magic of dragonflies. They represent overcoming delusions about the self.

They are also associated with warriors. For example, the ancient Egyptians represented dragonflies in papyrus scenes about battles. Warriors admired the speed and darting movements of the dragonflies and wished to emulate them.

In some cultures, dragonflies represent good luck or prosperity. So make a wish when you see a dragonfly, and it might just come true.
