Considered one of the foremost American impressionists and certainly, the most well-known, Frederick Childe Hassam painted this glorious summer scene in 1891. It was executed at height of his creativity as an artist.
Childe Hassam was a regular visitor to the Isles of Shoals, nine small, rocky, treeless islands off the New Hampshire coast. The painting portrays the stunning wildflower garden cultivated by his friend, poet Celia Thaxter, a garden that provided a marvelous contrast to the rugged terrain of the islands in the background. Vibrant red poppies entangled in lush green foliage introduce a view of bleached Babb's Rock. It is considered one of Hassam's finest works and currently hangs in the National Gallery in Washington DC.
