There's no shortage of beautiful regions in the United States, from the dreamy desert landscapes of the Southwest to the charming small towns of New England.

But when it comes to natural diversity, few areas can compete with the Pacific Northwest. There are stunning mountains, gorgeous seas of evergreen trees standing tall and dramatic, plentiful lakes, rivers, meadows, scenic, weathered beaches, misty rainforests, and some of the best stargazing spots in the entire country.

With so much diversity and natural beauty, hardly anywhere else on earth compares. And towering above it all, Mount Rainier stands alone.

Most people define the Pacific Northwest as Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia. Broader definitions can also include Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming. They are all incredibly different in flora, fauna, climate, and beauty. The climatic regions vary from alpine to arid desert, rainforest to rain shadow.

But the rugged coastal waters capture our imaginations when we think of that part of the world. And miles upon miles of gorgeous beaches.

British Columbia has so much coastline it's mind-boggling. Washington beaches tend to be wilder and rockier but still beautiful. The Oregon Coast is where you'll find miles of beaches for walking and playing. But the waters of the Pacific Ocean can be freezing and treacherous. If you hope to frolic in the water, your best bet is to find a beach with great tide pools. And there are many of those.

The rocky coast is home to an incredible assortment of wildlife. Larry Eifert has captured that up and down the coast for many of the Pacific Northwest's national parks. This stunning image was painted as a mural in one of the park's Visitor Centers and focuses on a tide pool as a marine sanctuary teeming with wildlife.

Larry Eifert

Larry Eifert is an American painter and naturalist known for his vivid depictions of wilderness landscapes and ecosystems across the United States. Born in 1946, he developed a deep appreciation for nature early in life, which became the foundation of his artistic journey. Self-taught and deeply influenced by the traditions of American landscape art, Eifert merged his passion for the environment with his creative vision, crafting works that celebrate the intricate beauty of the natural world.

Eifert's art, widely recognized for its educational value and aesthetic appeal, is a source of enlightenment for many. His detailed murals and paintings in over 175 national and state parks, museums, and wildlife centers help interpret ecological and historical themes for the public. Working closely with the National Park Service, he aims to connect viewers to the landscapes he portrays, often highlighting lesser-known species, complex ecological relationships, and the stories embedded in natural places.

Over the decades, Eifert has emerged as a beacon of hope in environmental art. He uses his talents to advocate for conservation and environmental education. His work, a reflection of the beauty of America's wild spaces, serves as a visual reminder of the importance of preserving them. Eifert's leading voice in this field inspires a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world through public installations and private collections.
