Alfred Concanen

Alfred Concanen (1835–1886) was a distinguished British lithographer and illustrator who was celebrated for his vibrant and detailed sheet music covers during the Victorian era. Born in Nottingham to Edward John Concanen, a portrait painter, and Mary Ann Burgess, Alfred was part of a family with artistic roots tracing back to Ireland. He began his career in the 1850s, initially working as an attorney's clerk before transitioning to lithography, likely under his father's guidance. Concanen's early professional endeavors included significant partnerships with Thomas Wales Lee and Henry Herapath Siebe. These collaborations, operating under the imprints "Concanen & Lee" and later "Concanen, Lee & Siebe," Were instrumental in establishing his reputation and laying the foundation for his prolific output in illustrated music covers.

Concanen's artwork became synonymous with the British music hall scene, capturing the essence of performers like George Leybourne and Alfred Vance. His illustrations were not mere portraits but dynamic representations of theatrical acts, often imbued with a delightful sense of humor and incisive social commentary. Beyond music covers, Concanen contributed illustrations to publications such as The Wilds of London and Low Life Depths by James Greenwood, and he produced theater posters and bird's-eye view maps of contemporary battlefields in collaboration with firms like Stannard & Son. His distinctive style, characterized by meticulous detail and a keen sense of the theatrical, earned him acclaim and a lasting legacy in the realm of visual arts.

Throughout his career, Concanen resided and worked in various parts of London, including Soho and Hammersmith, maintaining studios that became hubs for artistic production. His personal life saw him married to Mary Anne Tholen, with whom he had several children, including Hugh Tholen Concanen, who followed in his father's artistic footsteps. Later, he formed a partnership with Ellen (possibly the actress Nellie Herbert), and their daughter, Violet Eileen Concanen, became the mother of actors Derrick and Terence de Marney. Alfred Concanen's sudden death in 1886 marked the end of a vibrant career, but his works continue to be celebrated and preserved in institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Library, serving as enduring and inspiring testaments to his artistic contributions.
