Humans have always been fascinated by hummingbirds, but what captivates us so much about this little bird?

The hummingbird is unique among the creatures of the Earth.

Although they are only a couple of inches long, they flap their little wings so fast and powerfully that they produce a humming sound (hence their name). Their wings can move up to 50 times per second, and they don't even need to land to eat but instead hover over their food.

They can identify and remember food sources, so they visit the same places year after year as we watch them return with joy to our gardens.

Hummers can travel thousands of miles when they migrate. Some travel as much as 500 miles in a single trek.

They fuel up for their journey on sugar and insects and can eat more than twice their body weight in nectar and insects daily.

They can enter a state similar to hibernation when it is cold out. It is a deep sleep where their metabolic rate can drop as much as 95%. It can take 20 minutes to an hour to wake up from this state.

Hummingbirds are much stronger than they look, with 25 to 30% of a hummingbird's weight due to their pectoral muscles.

As impressive as their wing speed is, their heart rate is even faster. It can beat up to 1260 beats per minute.

They have a long history of folklore and symbolism in native cultures. For example, the Aztecs saw them as a connection between the physical and spiritual world. Native Americans see hummingbirds as healers and bringers of love, good luck, and joy. In Central America, they are a sign of love and will bring love to the person who spots them.
