People have been decorating their homes for the holidays for hundreds of years. The tradition began with ancient winter solstice celebrations. Before electric lights and shiny ornaments, Europeans used evergreen branches, holly, and mistletoe as decorations. These plants stood for life and renewal during the darkest part of the year. In the 1500s, Germans started bringing evergreen trees inside and decorating them with candles, apples, and homemade ornaments. Over time, this became the Christmas tree tradition we know today.

Holiday decorating became even more popular in the 1800s when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert made the Christmas tree fashionable. The idea quickly spread across Europe and North America. Victorian families decorated their homes with garlands, wreaths, and candles, making decorating a special family tradition. When electric Christmas lights were invented in the late 1800s, people began decorating the outside of their homes too, turning neighborhoods into bright, festive places that celebrated the season.

Today, holiday decorating is still going strong. For many people around the world, it is a way to be creative and find joy. Some hang simple wreaths on their doors, while others set up big light displays that light up whole streets. The tradition keeps changing, but it still brings hope and brings people together. Every decoration, whether a garland or a string of lights, shows a wish to make winter brighter and to celebrate with others.
