Although often considered an American Folk Art tradition, brought to the early United States by the early English and Dutch settlers, quilting's origins can be traced much further back.

Quilts have been made worldwide for centuries in one form or another, with many countries and cultures laying claim to the first.

The earliest examples include a Mongolian quilted floor covering from around the 1st century AD. It looked like a carpet in quilted form.

There is also a quilted panel, part of a set of three made in Sicily in the late 1300s. It resides in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection in London.

There were heavily stitched and appliqued quilts made for churches and the rich in Sweden in the fifteenth century. They were created from silk, wool, and felt.

The quilting style we know today is believed to have originated in Europe during the Crusades. Historians found that the Turks first began wearing quilted fabric under their armor to keep warm from the harsh climate. The design proved so good that it rapidly evolved into bed coverings and other forms of clothing.

India has a rich history of quilted bedcoverings, from Kantha in the east to Ralli in the West. Quilted clothing is also popular in many parts of the world, including the Middle East and China. And patchwork, integral to our understanding of quilts, has long been made in places like Central Asia and the Korean peninsula.

The American quilt story is part of a much larger World of Quilts.

Nancy Moore

Nancy Moore is a self-taught American artist renowned for her evocative mixed-media paintings that delve into themes of transformation, identity, and the human connection to nature. Her artistic journey began in childhood, where she found solace and expression through drawing and painting. Over the years, Moore has developed a distinctive style that is a fascinating blend of watercolor, graphite, gouache, metallic paint, colored pencils, wax crayons, and wood-burning techniques. This fusion of materials reflects her belief in the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world, aiming to create a seamless, mutually sustaining continuum.

Moore's work often features figures that challenge conventional norms, particularly through her 'Unconventional Women' series. These pieces, which explore themes of shape-shifting, gender fluidity, and creation myths, are profoundly intuitive and emotionally resonant. Moore's subjects emerge organically on the paper, guided by emotion and subconscious exploration. This process results in both personal and universally resonant artworks, offering a rich tapestry of visual storytelling that invites viewers to question and expand their perceptions of identity and transformation.

Throughout her career, Moore has left an indelible mark on the art world, exhibiting her work in various galleries, museums, and public institutions across the United States. Her art has found homes in private collections from Vermont to California, a testament to its broad appeal. Moore's continued engagement with audiences through exhibitions and her online presence further cements her influence. By sharing her creative process and the narratives behind her work, Moore fosters a deeper connection with viewers, encouraging them to explore their own journeys of transformation and self-discovery.
