Handmade and hand-painted ceramic tiles have been used worldwide since ancient times. The earliest use of decorative tiles was found in Egypt, dating to 4000 BC. Tiles were also made by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans.

During the Islamic Golden Age, painted tiles became very popular. They were used as embellishments for both the outside and inside of buildings. Beautiful tile works from the 12th Century are found in many famous mosques.

In the Middle Ages, decorative tiles became popular in Europe. They arrived in Spain with the Moors and then spread to the neighboring countries, finally reaching the rest of Europe. Tiles were handcrafted, expensive, and were only used by the rich, especially royalty and churches.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Holland became an important center for decorative tiles with their Delftware. Dutch tiles were famous for their cobalt blue and white coloring. They were popular in Europe and worldwide, including in the American colonies.

During the Industrial Revolution, technological innovations allowed the British to mass-produce ceramic tiles, making them more affordable for the middle class. Handmade and hand-painted tiles were still popular, but the mass production of ceramic tiles helped more people enjoy their lasting beauty.

In the early 20th Century, patterned tiles continued to be popular, especially decorative tiles influenced by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles popular between 1900 and 1940. These tiles were brightly colored with rich designs and used in all architectural settings.

These days, colorful ceramic tiles are still trendy despite being one of the oldest decorative art forms. They create eye-catching displays on homes, businesses, and institutions.

This stunning tile image was created for us by the UK artist Nina Pace, and some of the individual pictures have been used to create wall tiles in Britain. We hope you enjoy the colors and intricate artwork as a puzzle.
