Jean-François Millet

Jean-François Millet, a French painter born in 1814 in Gruchy and a hamlet in Normandy, was deeply influenced by rural life from an early age. He was raised in a peasant farming family. His art education began in Cherbourg and continued in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. Initially, he painted portraits and mythological scenes, but his focus gradually shifted to the everyday life of the rural poor. He found a profound beauty and dignity in their labors that he sought to capture in his art.

Millet gained widespread attention and acclaim with works like The Sower (1850) and The Gleaners (1857), which portrayed agricultural workers with a realism and empathy that challenged traditional academic norms. These paintings, often set in the French countryside, depicted peasants performing daily tasks such as sowing, gleaning, or resting after labor. His honest and often somber portrayals of rural life resonated during a time of social and economic change in France, drawing both praise for their humanistic approach and criticism for their unidealized subject matter. Some critics saw his work as a departure from the idealized, romanticized depictions of rural life that were popular at the time. In contrast, others appreciated his commitment to truth and authenticity.

Later in life, Millet settled in Barbizon, a village near the Forest of Fontainebleau, where he became a central figure of the Barbizon School, a movement that emphasized naturalistic landscape and rural genre painting. His work, which profoundly influenced future generations of artists, including Vincent van Gogh, who admired Millet’s ability to convey human emotion and connection to the land, is a testament to the enduring impact of his legacy. Jean-François Millet died in 1875, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire and influence artists today.
