The oral tradition of storytelling goes back to the beginning of time. Long before what we now know as social media, wise men traveled from town to town, village to village, bringing back news of things far and wide. Some stories were crucial to their survival, and others were pure entertainment. This was a very special event in the early stages of most cultures. People would gather in a circle, and the storyteller would stand in the center to be seen and heard by all listeners. Q&A was also a part of this tradition.
Often the storyteller was one of the wisest or oldest persons in the village or tribe and was usually very well respected. This was also a way of passing on a people's history and culture. This painting represents an African village; however, this tradition is not exclusive to the African culture. All over the world, this tradition was a means of people relating news and relevant information to the people in their small circle.
Storytelling evolved into the plays and entertainment we share today. One of the most famous storytellers is William Shakespeare. Although his life was short, Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. He was a huge stepping stone in building storytelling because his work was expansive and relatable to everyone. To this day, Shakespeare is still the most-performed playwright of all time and is continuously adapted for film.
The evolution of storytelling reflects how people learn and communicate. Through oral or written storytelling, the voice of narration will always have a way, place, and purpose. Though the mediums have changed today, the core concept of using a sequence of events in an exciting narrative has remained the same.
