"I'm a remarkable woman, always was, though none of you seemed to think so." – May Morris, 1936.

When May joined Morris & Co, she designed wallpaper, but at 23, she became Director of Morris & Co's embroidery department and expanded the business significantly. From 1885 to 1896, she was responsible for creating new patterns and designs for wallpapers and fabrics, supervising a team of needlewomen.

Throughout her life, May remained a committed socialist.  In 1907, she co-founded the Women's Guild of Arts — no existing guild of the time would admit women — and campaigned to raise the professional status and bargaining power of women and girls working in arts and crafts.

Please Note: The original art for this puzzle was produced as a tapestry, so you may see some texture on the image.

May Morris, William Morris & Co

May Morris was a highly skilled designer, embroiderer, and influential figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement, a late 19th-century and early 20th-century international design movement that sought to reform the decorative arts. Best known for her work with William Morris & Co., she was the daughter of the renowned designer William Morris. May inherited her father's artistic vision and carved out her significant legacy. She specialized in embroidery and textile design, elevating these crafts to a fine art form and championing their importance within the decorative arts.

Trained at the South Kensington School of Design and later managing the embroidery department of Morris & Co., May played a pivotal role in shaping the firm's output. Her designs, characterized by their intricate detail, natural motifs, and refined sense of composition, were a testament to her exceptional technical talent. Beyond this, she was a strong advocate for women's work in the arts, often writing, lecturing, and mentoring at a time when female artists were routinely overlooked.

May Morris's impact extends beyond her own creations. She helped preserve and promote the ideals of the Arts and Crafts ethos, emphasizing craftsmanship, quality, and the beauty of handmade work. Today, her contributions are increasingly recognized in exhibitions and scholarly work, a testament to her enduring influence and securing her place as a central figure in the movement and as a trailblazer who expanded the scope of what women artists could achieve in her era.
