John Hinde

John Wilfrid Hinde (1916–1997) was a British photographer renowned for his vibrant and meticulously staged color images that captured the essence of mid-20th-century leisure and tourism. Born in Somerset, England, Hinde began his photography career during World War II as a civil defense photographer. After the war, he briefly ventured into the circus world before returning to photography and establishing John Hinde Ltd. in Dublin in 1956. His company produced high-quality color postcards, focusing on idyllic scenes of Ireland, Britain, and other European destinations. With its idealized and nostalgic style, Hinde's work not only influenced the art of postcard photography but also left a lasting impact on the industry, shaping the way we perceive and create postcards today.

Hinde's approach to photography was methodical and artistic. He employed large-format cameras and worked with a team of photographers to create meticulously planned images. Each photograph was not just a click but a result of careful composition and extensive post-production work to achieve the desired color saturation and composition. His pictures were designed to evoke a sense of happiness and nostalgia, giving viewers a visual representation of idealized holiday experiences. The postcards produced by his studio became immensely popular, with millions sold worldwide, and are now considered iconic representations of the era.

In recognition of his contributions to photography, Hinde's work was featured in a retrospective at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1993. This retrospective, a significant honor in the art world, showcased the breadth and depth of Hinde's work, highlighting his influence on the art of photography. Despite his passing in 1997, his legacy endures through the John Hinde Collection, which preserves and showcases his iconic images. Hinde's photographs continue to be celebrated for their vibrant color, meticulous composition, and ability to capture an era's spirit, making them valuable artifacts of photographic history.

For your peace of mind, all orders are sent using a tracked courier service. Once your order has been picked up, you will receive an email with the tracking details, allowing you to monitor your shipment's progress.

Orders outside the U.S. are not eligible for Free Shipping. Please choose your paid shipping method during checkout. We offer DHL, UPS, and USPS Priority Mail for international shipments.

Customs and Import Duties: If your puzzles are being delivered outside the USA, your order may be subject to import fees. These are stipulated by each individual country and are not collected or remitted by Nautilus Puzzles. Unfortunately, as we cannot advise you on the amount of these fees, we recommend contacting your country’s customs office or tax agent for the respective rates.

Returns - Peace of Mind Guaranteed: If you are less than delighted with your new puzzle, you can return it to us within 30 days of receiving your order for a full refund or store credit. We ask that it be unused and in its original condition and packaging (shrink-wrap not removed).

If you contact us in advance, we can email you a prepaid shipping label that you can print and affix to your return. To request this label, simply provide your order number and reason for return to our customer service team at help@nautiluspuzzles.com. Shipping costs will be deducted from your refund/credit, but they are charged at our volume discount shipping rates rather than the standard retail rate.

Please note we can only accept custom puzzles for return or refund if there are quality issues, as these items have been produced specifically for you.
