Some of the oldest rock formations on Earth are located in Venezuela's highlands. They are high, flat-topped mountains surrounded by a sea of jungle. Two mighty rivers are born in those Tepuys mountains, and miles away, they merge before flowing into the ocean. They are the Orinoco and Caroni rivers; the color of Orinoco's water is brownish and opaque, and Caroni's is bluish and transparent; they flow side by side for miles until they finally merge.

The Warao, their principal indigenous inhabitants, keep their stories alive through the generations.

Aboriginal legend tells that these two rivers symbolize two lovers condemned by the gods to be together but never to mix. 

The people of the region say that the murky and muddy-colored waters that flow from the Orinoco River hold warmth (representing man). In contrast, the dark blue waters of the Caroní River signify strong feelings (representing woman). One night, although the gods opposed them, they decided to seal their love with a kiss and came together briefly, forming a lake of colors. 

Hundreds of tributaries tried to sway Caroni's path, but she did not waver for a moment because of her desire to meet with her beloved. Finally, they kissed each other in a sea of freshwater bubbles, held hands, and went side by side, traveling the world and riding the Atlantic ocean currents.
