La Primavera or Printemps, was painted by Galileo Chini in 1914. Chini - based in Florence - was an Italian decorator, designer, painter, and potter. A prominent member of the Italian Art Nouveau movement, he also taught decorative arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. He designed sets for several Puccini operas and he was responsible for several of the paintings and decorations in the Brandini Chapel, the church of San Francesco in Pisa and the Throne Hall in Bangkok. His work is colorful and allegorical, and has much in common with the Art Nouveau style of Gustav Klimt.

Galileo Chini

Galileo Chini (1873–1956) was a versatile Italian artist known for his painting, ceramics, interior design, and theater work. His artistic journey began in Florence, where he apprenticed with his uncle, Dario Chini, a renowned decorator and restorer. He then honed his skills at the Scuole Professional d'Arte di Santa Croce and the Scuola Libera di Nudo at the Accademia di Belle Arti. In 1896, Chini co-founded the 'Arte della Ceramica' in Florence. This workshop gained fame for its Art Nouveau (Liberty style) ceramics, playing a significant role in the revival of decorative arts in Italy .
Chini's artistic versatility led him to various monumental projects. Notably, between 1911 and 1913, he was invited by King Rama V of Siam (now Thailand) to decorate the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall in Bangkok. This commission allowed Chini to immerse himself in Eastern aesthetics, which profoundly influenced his subsequent works. Upon returning to Italy, he became a leading figure in the Liberty style movement, leaving his mark on the decoration of significant buildings such as the Terme Berzieri in Salsomaggiore Terme and the Palazzo dei Congressi. His collaborations extended to the world of opera, where he designed sets for Giacomo Puccini's productions, including the world premiere of 'Turandot' in 1926.
Throughout his career, Chini remained dedicated to integrating fine and applied arts. He taught decorative arts at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, influencing a generation of artists. His works, characterized by their rich symbolism and intricate designs, are preserved in various museums, including the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome and the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza. Chini's legacy, which continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts worldwide, is a testament to his enduring influence on Italian art and design.
