On May 8, 1889, Vincent Van Gogh reported for treatment at the asylum Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy, not far from Arles. This treatment was in response to the violent incident that provoked him to cut off his own ear to silence the hallucinations he was experiencing. After attempting to gift the ear to a female acquaintance, his doctor recommended he be committed to the mental hospital.

Despite his unstable mental health, this time at the asylum proved his most prolific and creative artistic period. From 1889 to 1890, he created 142 paintings, including one of his most famous - the incredible Starry Night.

For this painting of the asylum garden, Van Gogh chose an unusual viewpoint facing the hospital wall. As a result, the painting gains a different perspective from the diagonal path and stone bench. The exuberantly flowering bushes and trees are depicted in a tangle of thickly painted brushstrokes. Despite the huge variety of shapes and colors, the composition has amazing depth and structure and is considered one of his finest works.

The perfect gift for wooden jigsaw puzzlers, fine art and Impressionist art enthusiasts, and Vincent Van Gogh fans, this traditional adult wooden jigsaw puzzle can be done time and again. Our wooden jigsaw puzzle artists have included many shaped whimsy wooden jigsaw puzzle pieces that match the theme of the painting, and we have integrated them in ways that will delight and surprise you as you put the wooden jigsaw puzzle together.

Vincent Willem van Gogh born in 1853 was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, most of which date from the last two years of his life.  Many of his works of art have translated into wooden puzzles for adults.

Irises was painted in 1889 during his stay at the asylum Saint Paul de Mausole.  The irises were originally painted purple, but over time the red pigment has faded leaving the irises blue.  In our wooden jigsaw puzzles you can see all the irises are unique and blue.

Tragically,  Van Gogh died at the too young age of 37 without ever knowing the recognition his art would receive or that he is now viewed as one of the most influential artists having helped lay the foundations of modern art.
