Amsterdam was founded in the 13th century as a small fishing village behind a dyke/dam that protected the residents from the Amstel river. Hence the name Amstel - Dam.

It has grown into a bustling capital city with nearly 1 million people, many of whom get around by bicycle.

The city has more canals than Venice (165 stretching a distance of over 60 miles), most of which were built in the 17th century. These canals earned the city the nickname "Venice of the North."

Amsterdam also has more bridges than Paris. They join the more than 90 small islands than make up the city center.

The city is built on clay, barely above sea level. The foundation is a significant feat of engineering as it stands on over eleven million poles and more than a few bicycles. Over 25,000 bikes end up in the canals each year. As only ten thousand or so get fished out by the city, many rest in peace in the water and help keep the city afloat on the marshy ground.

But unfortunately, the city is still sinking, just like Venice, as evidenced by the many cracks in the staircases and slanted buildings.

Amsterdam's most desirable real estate is along the canals, with tree-lined streets, little cafes and shops, and walking and bike paths.

The houses are slender for a good reason. Back in the 17th century, residents were taxed based on the width of their property, making a thin house a great way to save money. As a result, the narrowest house in Amsterdam has a facade that is only three feet wide!
