The concept of "Cozy" has real meaning in Scandinavian countries. They have different words for it, but ultimately it means the same thing. In Denmark, it's Hygge (which enjoyed some American popularity during the pandemic), Norway has Koselig, and Sweden has Mysa.

They all boil down to one concept - being relaxed, being in the moment, taking time with friends, and consciously de-stressing.

A great example of Mysa is working a puzzle in front of a hot fire with a steaming mug of cocoa on a cold winter afternoon. You embrace the visual, scent, sound, touch, and taste. So Mysigt!

Carl Larsson is without question the quintessential Scandinavian mysigt painter.

One of Sweden's most well-known, beloved artists, he embraced the feeling of coziness and family in all of his paintings.

Carl was born in Gamla Stan, the old quarter of Stockholm, in 1853. His family was poor and struggled to make ends meet. Fortunately, his artistic talent emerged early, and his teacher at the pauper's school encouraged him to apply for the prestigious Art Academy.

Upon graduation, Carl found work illustrating books, magazines, and newspapers. However, he didn't succeed as an artist until, in 1882, he met his wife Karin and finally switched from somewhat pretentious oil painting to watercolors.

Carl and Karin had eight children, and he derived much joy from painting the family in cozy home situations.

In 1888 Karin's father gave them a small house in Sundborn, which inspired their love of art, color, and interior design.

Carl's paintings and books have made the house one of the world's most familiar homes. But not only that. The interior design and the lively family life depicted in Carl's fantastic watercolors have become almost synonymous with our picture of Sweden.

Christmas Eve was painted by Carl in 1904 at the height of his popularity and shows an abundant Christmas feast, with friends and family gathered to enjoy the bounty and the mysa.
