Nearly all cats, including lions, tigers, and domestic cats, are descended from one prehistoric creature. The oldest known relative, the African Wildcat, first developed over 10,000 years ago. The species still exists, living in the Savannahs of the Middle East and Africa.

Cats, in a unique and mutual decision, began to coexist with humans in 4000 BC, in Ancient Egypt. They ventured into towns in search of sustenance, often finding it in the form of rats in Egyptian grain stores. This symbiotic relationship between cats and humans, born out of necessity, marked the beginning of a bond that is unlike any other in the animal kingdom, a bond that we, as humans, can relate to.

The Ancient Egyptians welcomed cats into their homes, usually to keep snakes away. They began to worship cats as sacred animals and banned their export to other countries. But as the Roman Empire grew, cats were introduced to Europe.

After being regarded as sacred for thousands of years, cats became associated with evil, often poorly treated and even killed. This shift in perception can be attributed to various factors, including the rise of Christianity in Europe, which viewed cats as symbols of paganism and witchcraft. In the 1700s, American settlers shipped large numbers of cats from Europe to control plagues of rats, introducing the idea of the domestic cat to the Americas.

By the 1800s, cats regained their rightful place of worship as family pets in Europe and the USA. At the turn of the century and into the First World War, cats served a great purpose. They were used for sniffing out poisonous gas and controlling rats on warships, playing a crucial role in maintaining the health and safety of the troops.
