The Chinese Theatre in Hollywood is the most famous movie theater in the world and one of the most recognizable Los Angeles landmarks.
It was opened in May 1927 by Sid Grauman, who was building upon his success with the nearby Egyptian theater.
Grauman is credited with single-handedly moving the focus of the Los Angeles entertainment industry from downtown LA to Hollywood, with all its accompanying fanfare. He owned a one-third interest in the building, with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks holding the other two-thirds.
The theatre currently houses the most enormous IMAX auditorium globally, and it is the only IMAX theatre to actually have a curtain.
It is equally famous for what is on the outside, with hundreds of thousands of people visiting each year to see and touch the footprints and handprints of the favorite stars immortalized there.
When the 1977 premiere of the original Star Wars film was celebrated at the theatre, some of its most famous stars were captured in cement. You can still see the footprints of C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vador near the entrance.
