In May 1890, Vincent van Gogh arrived in Auvers-sur-Oise, a small village near Paris. Van Gogh was deeply depressed. He had cut off much of his left ear a year and a half earlier, and his stay at an asylum had not helped.

Within hours of coming to Auvers, he met Paul-Ferdinand Gachet, a doctor and an art enthusiast who became his friend.

Gachet encouraged van Gogh to ignore his depression and focus on painting. He completed nearly 80 pieces in two months at Auvers, including Vase With Red Poppies and Daisies (also called Still Life, Vase with Daisies and Poppies). Experts believe he may have given the picture to Dr. Gauchet as payment for his treatment. It was the last painting van Gogh completed in the weeks before his death in July 1890.

The painting sold at Sotheby's for $61.8 million in 2014, the highest price ever for a van Gogh still life at auction. However, now its owner and whereabouts are unknown.
