The tagline for the San Francisco Tourist website truly exemplifies the spirit of this wonderful city - "Our Gate is Open". Whether you are a first time visitor or a local, San Francisco welcomes everyone to enjoy its famous landmarks.

Many of them are depicted here - in this colorful surrealistic painting by the famous Portuguese cityscapes painter, Miguel Freitas.

You can see the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the super-curvy Lombard Street, the bustling Fisherman's Wharf, and the striking Union Square. The U.S. Navy originally intended to paint the landmark bridge black with yellow stripes! The red paint was intended to only be a temporary sealant. Now, of course we couldn't imagine it any other color, as it has become one of the true symbols of West Coast America.

Home to nearly one million people, with every possible nationality and culture represented, San Francisco is a cacophony of sounds and colors, with some of the best food you will find anywhere in the United States. The population density is second only to Manhattan, and every square foot is put to good use.

Miguel has depicted the city on a glorious summer day, but those of you who have spent any time in the Bay Area, know that during the summer months San Francisco is far more likely to be shrouded in fog early in the day, only revealing it's secrets in late afternoon, before the fog rolls back in again in the evening.
