Nicolai Habbe

Nicolai François Habbe, born on 10 April 1827 in Elsinore, Denmark, was a painter of Russian-Danish descent and the elder son of Russian consul François de Habbe. He began his formal training at the Copenhagen Academy in 1839 and was awarded its silver medal seven years later. Following his academic studies, Habbe traveled to Italy to continue refining his skills. A watercolor figure study dated 1863, inscribed with a reflection on Rome, hints at this period's personal and artistic significance. In 1851, he earned the prestigious Neuhausen prize for The Reservists of 1848 on the March, an oil painting now housed in the National Museum of Denmark alongside two of his portraits. The Neuhausen Prize, a significant recognition in art, marked a turning point in Habbe's career. From 1847 to 1870, he regularly exhibited genre scenes at the Copenhagen Academy, establishing himself as a respected artist before emigrating to Australia in 1855 with his brother Alexander in pursuit of gold.

In Australia, Nicolai worked in both Melbourne and Sydney, continuing to produce oil portraits, genre scenes, and allegorical compositions. He collaborated with his brother Alexander on glass painting and theatrical scene design and likely introduced Alexander to stagecraft. Despite dedicating his life to fine art, Nicolai's career remained in the shadow of his brother's rising reputation in theatrical design. Still, his work earned local recognition. In 1875, the Melbourne Athenaeum, a prominent cultural institution known for supporting the arts, praised his drawing skills and described his use of color as evocative of the Old Masters. His originality and classical influence were noted, though critical reception was mixed.

One of his more talked-about pieces, Britannia Ruling the Waves, drew particular attention for its ambitious allegorical vision, featuring Neptune and sea nymphs in a grand display of imperial imagery. While some critics dismissed his figure work, the painting commanded the highest price in its exhibition, reflecting both public curiosity and the theatrical flair in Habbe's artistic approach. This public interest in his work adds an intriguing dimension to his legacy.
