Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, and the name "Porto" influenced the country's name.

Established by the Celts on the mouth of the Douro River, the earliest evidence of settlers in Porto dates back to the end of the Bronze Age, near the 8th century BCE. This makes Porto one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Periodically serving as the Portuguese capital, it has many more historically significant buildings than Lisbon, as Porto remained largely undamaged in the 1755 earthquake that injured the larger city.

The center of Porto has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site for its mix of Baroque, Neoclassical, and splash of Belle Epoque architecture, all in varying degrees of preservation, and its cobbled streets. At its heart is the Sao Bento train station, considered one of the best European examples of the Beaux-Arts style and one of the most beautiful train stations in the world.

Of course, Porto is most famous for the wine produced in the Douro Vally, which is shipped worldwide. This outstanding, sweet wine, with its high alcohol content, is enjoyed by many diners as a dessert after a meal. It has been synonymous with Porto since Roman times, as the Romans are believed to have introduced wine-making to the region.

This beautiful puzzle pays homage to Matosinhos. Sitting at the very mouth of the Douro, on the sea edge of Porto, it is considered one of the prettiest coastal villages in Portugal. The baroque bell tower Torre dos Clerigos, built in the late 1700s and visible all over the city, still serves as a lighthouse for the port.
