The Italian American futurist artist Joseph Stella painted nature in poetic and vibrant colors.

Giuseppe Michele Stella was born in a mountain village near Naples, Italy, in 1877. At 18, he arrived at Ellis Island and took the English version of his name, Joseph Stella. He joined his older brother, a successful physician, and the family hoped he would follow in his brother's footsteps.

However, after a year at medical school and another year at pharmacy school, Joseph Stella found his true passion - the arts. Despite the expectations of his family he chose to follow his heart. While enrolled at the College of Pharmacy, he attended the antique class at the Art Students League in New York. By the end of his first year of pharmacy school, he had given up on his family's hopes of becoming a physician. Instead, he sought after his dream and enrolled at the New York School of Art.

Although he is recognized primarily for his dynamic futurist paintings of New York, in particular Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, Stella's art goes beyond the urban landscape. He saw beauty and mystery in nature and completed many images of flowers, plants, and birds, each stroke of his brush capturing the essence of life.

He once wrote that his wish was "that my every working day might begin and end, as a good omen, with the light, gay painting of a flower," a sentiment that reflects his belief in the uplifting and transformative power of art.

Although he became an American citizen in 1923, he missed the joy, light, and open spaces of his native Italian countryside and frequently escaped there to paint.

These Italian-themed works, influenced by the bright light, and filled with flora and fauna of his native Italian countryside, are layered with references to the spiritual and liturgical traditions he recalled from his youth.

What’s the Difference Between Easter Puzzles and Springtime Puzzles?

+
-
While there is some overlap, the main distinction lies in the theme:
  • Easter puzzles typically include holiday motifs such as eggs, chicks, baskets, and the Easter Bunny.
  • Spring puzzles focus more broadly on nature—flowers blooming, garden scenes, wildlife, and seasonal countryside imagery.
Choose an Easter jigsaw puzzle if you want something festive and symbolic. A springtime puzzle might be better if you’re after a serene, nature-inspired visual experience.

Why are Wooden Easter Puzzles Better than Cardboard Puzzles?

+
-
Many seasoned puzzlers prefer wooden puzzles for their:
  • Durability – They hold up over time and can be passed down or framed.
  • Feel – Satisfying texture and precise fit.
  • Eco-consciousness – Made from sustainably sourced wood, reducing waste.
  • Artistry – Laser-cut designs allow for highly detailed and artistic pieces.
Nautilus puzzles are all handcrafted from wood, combining form and function into something worthy of display and reuse.

How do I Choose the Right Easter Puzzle?

+
-
Consider the following when making your selection:
  • Skill level – If you’re new to puzzles, start with a mini wooden puzzle or one with 200–300 pieces. More advanced puzzlers often enjoy 500–1,000 pieces.
  • Time commitment – Smaller puzzles are great for quick breaks, while larger ones are perfect for multi-day experiences.
  • Intended use – Some customers frame their completed puzzles as seasonal décor. Choose artwork that you’ll love displaying.
