Dark clouds advance across the sky and almost obscure the evening sun. In their shadow, the disciples struggle to prevent their boat from sinking as the waves come close to filling it. This is a smaller painting, but the detail is impressive.

The artist illustrates the story of Christ calming the waters of the Sea of Galilee from the New Testament. Brueghel depicts the boat, lashed by the waves with Christ asleep inside, at the moment when one of the disciples decides to wake him before they are all shipwrecked. Also in the vessel are eleven disciples making every effort not to be sunk, rowing and attempting to manage the sails.

Collectors and patrons appreciated his refinement and the distinctive, soft, elegant brushstroke that Brueghel used to create detailed and delicate compositions, for which he became known as "Velvet" Brueghel.

Jan Brueghel, the Elder

Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625) was a Flemish painter renowned for his unique blend of detailed landscapes, allegorical scenes, and intricate still lifes. The son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan developed a distinctive style that was a marriage of meticulous attention to naturalistic detail and a poetic sense of composition. Often referred to as 'Velvet Brueghel' due to the fine, soft texture of his brushwork, he became known for his vivid floral arrangements, lush forest scenes, and collaborations with other prominent artists of his time, including Peter Paul Rubens. His works are celebrated for their vibrant colors, delicate handling, and imaginative subject matter, a testament to his unparalleled artistic vision.

Born in Brussels, Jan Brueghel was raised in an artistic family and received his early training from his grandmother before continuing his studies in Antwerp and Italy. His travels exposed him to the work of Italian masters and the classical ideals of the Renaissance, which influenced the refinement and balance seen in his compositions. After returning to Antwerp, he quickly gained prominence, joining the Guild of Saint Luke and earning patronage from elite clients, including Archduke Albert and the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. Orders outside the U.S. are not eligible for Free Shipping. Please choose your paid shipping method during checkout. We offer DHL, UPS, and USPS Priority Mail for international shipments.

Customs and Import Duties: If your puzzles are being delivered outside the USA, your order may be subject to import fees. These are stipulated by each individual country and are not collected or remitted by Nautilus Puzzles. Unfortunately, as we cannot advise you on the amount of these fees, we recommend contacting your country’s customs office or tax agent for the respective rates.

Returns - Peace of Mind Guaranteed: If you are less than delighted with your new puzzle, you can return it to us within 30 days of receiving your order for a full refund or store credit. We ask that it be unused and in its original condition and packaging (shrink-wrap not removed).

If you contact us in advance, we can email you a prepaid shipping label that you can print and affix to your return. To request this label, simply provide your order number and reason for return to our customer service team at help@nautiluspuzzles.com. Shipping costs will be deducted from your refund/credit, but they are charged at our volume discount shipping rates rather than the standard retail rate.

Please note we can only accept custom puzzles for return or refund if there are quality issues, as these items have been produced specifically for you.
