Although it draws inspiration from older legends, myths, magical tales, and epic poems, fantasy emerged in Victorian England as its own specific genre.

England, during that period, was the world's most significant economic power, and it experienced far-reaching industrialization. With that cultural backdrop, some writers chose to focus on the supernatural and seek refuge in enchanted worlds. And modern fantasy was born.

Children's literature was experiencing a golden age at that time, building upon years of folklore traditions. As parents enjoyed reading fantastical tales to their children, their desire for similar texts geared towards adults grew.

Writing styles ranged from texts and illustrations intended for children to the most intricately composed literature containing creatures, heroes, and worlds battling the forces of good and evil.

As an antidote to urbanization, much of the writing centered around magic in rural areas, themes built upon later by J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis.

Although the artist Tom Antonishak is more famous for painting wildlife, we thought he really captured the essence of Victorian Fantasy in this beautiful painting. It draws your eye through the woods to the colorful, frigate hotel perched on top of the hill, and makes you long to discover its magical mysteries.

The perfect gift for any wooden jigsaw puzzler or fantasy fan, this traditional wooden jigsaw puzzle can be done time and again. Our wooden jigsaw puzzle artists have included many shaped whimsy wooden jigsaw puzzle pieces that match the theme of the painting, and we have integrated them in ways that will delight and surprise you as you put the wooden jigsaw puzzle together.

    Tom Antonishak

Tom Antonishak, an American artist, is a master of the intersection of realism and abstraction. His work often focused on themes of identity, memory, and human presence, which is a testament to his technical precision. With a background in fine arts and years of professional experience in illustration and design, Antonishak brings awe-inspiring skills. His paintings and mixed-media pieces, known for their textured surfaces, layered meanings, and quiet intensity, are a sight to behold.

Based in Pennsylvania, Antonishak has exhibited his work in galleries throughout the Northeast and beyond, earning recognition for his thoughtful compositions and distinctive voice. He approaches his subjects—whether figures, objects, or abstract forms—with a sense of curiosity and restraint, allowing ambiguity to play a central role. His use of muted palettes and minimal yet deliberate marks creates a unique space for reflection and interpretation, drawing viewers in with its intriguing simplicity.

Antonishak’s art is defined by its subtle power. Rather than overwhelm, his work invites a slower, more contemplative kind of engagement, where emotional weight builds gradually. Each piece reflects a sensitivity to both material and message, offering a contemplative experience that lingers and encourages the viewer to engage with the emotional depth of his work. Through his art, Tom Antonishak explores what it means to be seen, to remember, and to exist in a space between clarity and mystery.
