A zebra's stripes are unique and distinctive, like human fingerprints. When a zebra foal is born, they have reddish-brown stripes. Those gradually become darker and change to black as they grow.

Zebras tend to live in friendly family groups of one male and several mares and foals, and a herd of zebras is often called a "Dazzle."

They have evolved to provide as much protection from predators as possible. New-born foals can stand six minutes after being born, and in 40 minutes, they can run.

All of their black and white fur is produced from melanocyte cells. These cells are primarily responsible for generating the pigment that gives color to skin and hair. In addition, melanocyte cells produce melanin, the outwardly visible pigment. In zebras, chemical messengers determine which melanocytes deliver pigment to which fur section, thus creating the zebra's black and white pattern.
