In Mykonos, strong northern winds blow all year long, but the Meltnemi are particularly active in summer, bringing cool air to an otherwise dry and hot island.

This is why bushes are more abundant than trees, gardens are surrounded by high walls, and windmills in Mykonos have become landmarks of the island.

There is no more iconic postcard of Greece than the magnificent windmills from Mykonos. Visible from every part of the island, there are 16 of them, although only two are still functioning and available to tour.

They are conspicuous by their snow-white color, circular structure made of stone, and pointy thatched roof.

The turbines are traditionally made of twelve wooden fan blades, each with a triangular-shaped wing made from the same cotton canvas used for sails in boats.

When the wind blows, the blades carry the movement to a central axis inside the building, forcing the grindstones below into a rotational motion.

To take advantage of the force of that movement at its strongest, the grinding machine was positioned on the top floor while the flour was gathered on the second floor.

The ground floor was used to store raw grain and processed flour.

Built by Venetians living on the island in the 17th century, the windmills were primarily used for crushing agricultural yields meant to be exported.

Brigitte Dehue

Brigitte Dehue, a contemporary visual artist, is renowned for her emotional resonance, refined aesthetic, and exploration of memory and personal narrative. Her pieces, predominantly in painting and mixed media, are a testament to an intimate dialogue between texture, color, and form. They often evoke a profound introspection, blending abstraction with subtle figuration to express themes of identity, longing, and the fleeting nature of time, creating a deep connection with the viewer.

Originally from the Netherlands, Dehue was influenced early on by the minimalist sensibilities of Northern European design and the expressive potential of color. After studying fine arts and art history, she developed a unique artistic voice that merges conceptual thought with tactile expression. Her work has been exhibited widely across Europe and North America, where it has resonated with audiences for its layered meanings and contemplative atmosphere, fostering a sense of reflection and thoughtfulness. Dehue’s paintings frequently reflect a balance between restraint and emotion, inviting viewers into a space of stillness and reflection.

Dehue’s creative process is deeply intuitive and meditative, often beginning with a single gesture or memory that evolves into a finished piece through a careful layering of materials and ideas. She draws inspiration from literature, music, and the quiet poetry of everyday life, translating these influences into visual forms that feel both personal and universal, making the audience feel included in her artistic narrative. As her body of work continues to grow, Brigitte Dehue remains committed to exploring the nuances of human experience through a visual language that is both elegant and emotionally resonant.
