Handmade and hand-painted ceramic tiles have been used worldwide since ancient times. The earliest use of decorative tiles was found in Egypt, dating to 4000 BC. Tiles were also made by the Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, and Romans.

During the Islamic Golden Age, painted tiles became very popular. They were used as embellishments for both the outside and inside of buildings. Beautiful tile works from the 12th Century are found in many famous mosques.

In the Middle Ages, decorative tiles became popular in Europe. They arrived in Spain with the Moors and then spread to the neighboring countries, finally reaching the rest of Europe. Tiles were handcrafted, expensive, and were only used by the rich, especially royalty and churches.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Holland became an important center for decorative tiles with their Delftware. Dutch tiles were famous for their cobalt blue and white coloring. They were popular in Europe and worldwide, including in the American colonies.

During the Industrial Revolution, technological innovations allowed the British to mass-produce ceramic tiles, making them more affordable for the middle class. Handmade and hand-painted tiles were still popular, but the mass production of ceramic tiles helped more people enjoy their lasting beauty.

In the early 20th Century, patterned tiles continued to be popular, especially decorative tiles influenced by the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles popular between 1900 and 1940. These tiles were brightly colored with rich designs and used in all architectural settings.

These days, colorful ceramic tiles are still trendy despite being one of the oldest decorative art forms. They create eye-catching displays on homes, businesses, and institutions.

This stunning tile image was created for us by the UK artist Nina Pace, and some of the individual pictures have been used to create wall tiles in Britain. We hope you enjoy the colors and intricate artwork as a puzzle.

Nina Pace

Nina Pace is a painter, illustrator, and surface designer based just outside of New York City, where she lives with her husband and two young daughters. Her artistic journey began with studies in painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and illustration at Syracuse University, where she earned her BFA. She later obtained her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Pace's work is deeply inspired by the natural world, particularly florals, which she captures with a vibrant and expressive style, a style that is uniquely her own.

Before fully dedicating herself to her art, Pace made a significant mark in the textile design industry, working for firms and freelancing as a designer. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Ash & Anchor, a brand that gained global recognition for its vibrant, bohemian patterns on scarves, pillows, tea towels, and serving trays. Ash & Anchor's products were local favorites and graced boutiques worldwide, from West Elm to Modcloth and Of A Kind. However, driven by her true passions, Pace boldly decided to close Ash & Anchor, a testament to her unwavering commitment to her art and design.

Pace's artwork embraces the full spectrum of natural colors, allowing each element in her compositions to flow organically. Her designs have been featured by clients such as Anthropologie, Chronicle Books, Little Brown Group, Quarto, The Art File, Nautilus Puzzles, Flame Tree Publishing, and Pigeon Posted. She continues to create and share her work through various platforms, including her official website and online shops, bringing the beauty of the natural world into everyday life. I invite you to explore her work further and discover the beauty she brings to the world.
