The Tree of Life is a historical symbol worldwide in various cultures, religions, mythologies, and folk tales. It is a powerful and versatile symbol with deep spiritual and philosophical meaning representing interconnectedness, growth, and life cycle and stems from ancient times. The oldest known example was found in Turkey, dating back to about 7000 BC.

In many traditions, the tree is seen as a symbol of wisdom, strength, and immortality. It can also symbolize the connection between the Earth and the heavens, as its roots reach the ground and branches stretch towards the sky.

It represents the source of life, a force that connects all lives or the cycle of life and death itself. Various myths include supernatural guardians protecting the tree and its fruits that grant immortality to those who eat it. It is typically planted at the center of the world, often within a sacred garden or forest. The tree of life is closely related to both the world tree, a motif found across many cultures that is typified by the Norse belief in the sacred tree Yggdrasill, and the tree of knowledge, which was said to grow in the Garden of Eden in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

In science, the Tree of Life is often used as a metaphor for the connection between the diversity of all life on Earth. Every organism on Earth appears to descend from a single common ancestor that existed roughly 3.5 billion years ago. As that ancestor and its descendants reproduced, life diverged in speciation. These divergences are often compared to branches on a single evolutionary tree. Phylogenetics is the study of how different groups of organisms are related to each other, using genetics and other evidence to create diagrams that explain the evolutionary history, called phylogenetic trees (or phylogenies).

It is the antecedent to the family tree, representing the connection to one's family and ancestors. The intricate network of branches represents growth and expansion throughout generations. It also symbolizes fertility as it always finds a way to keep growing through seeds or new saplings, and it is lush and green, which signifies its vitality.

Ray Troll

Ray Troll, an American artist and graphic designer, is celebrated for his one-of-a-kind fusion of science, humor, and pop culture. Hailing from Ketchikan, Alaska, Troll's art draws heavily from marine biology, paleontology, and the lush natural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. His distinct hand-drawn style, coupled with a playful sense of humor, has birthed a diverse portfolio. From intricate scientific illustrations to whimsical t-shirt designs, album covers, and fine art pieces, his work is a testament to his fascination with the ancient and the aquatic.

Troll studied at Bethany College in Kansas and later earned a Master of Fine Arts from Washington State University. His career took off after he moved to Alaska in the 1980s, where the abundant wildlife and vibrant fishing culture profoundly influenced his artistic vision. Over the years, he has collaborated closely with scientists, notably paleontologist Kirk Johnson, to create educational art that brings prehistoric life and natural history to the public in accessible, engaging ways. His art has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions across the United States, including at the Smithsonian and the Field Museum.

Beyond his visual work, Ray Troll is also a musician and member of the band The Ratfish Wranglers, merging his love of science with storytelling through music. His ability to bridge the gap between art and science has earned him a devoted following among educators, scientists, and art lovers alike. Whether he's drawing trilobites in vivid detail or composing quirky songs about evolution, Troll remains a passionate advocate for curiosity, conservation, and creativity.
