H. Hargrove

H. Hargrove, born Nicolo Sturiano in 1941 in Marsala, Italy, is a celebrated American artist renowned for his nostalgic depictions of rural life and Americana. Initially trained in wine chemistry, he immigrated to the United States in 1964 to work at a winery in upstate New York. He began painting scenes of the American countryside there during his free time. His artwork garnered attention when displayed in the winery's tasting room, leading him to pursue art professionally. He chose the pseudonym H. Hargrove, a name he selected from a phone book, to create a distinct artistic identity separate from his scientific background.

Hargrove's paintings, often featuring vibrant colors and intricate details, are characterized by their romanticized portrayals of American landscapes, barns, and covered bridges. His use of light and shadow and his attention to minor details bring his scenes to life. Over his career, he has produced more than 100 limited edition prints, many of which have sold out, and his works are displayed in homes and galleries worldwide. Notably, he created commemorative pieces such as "From Athens to Atlanta" for the centennial Olympic Games and "The World Is Watching" for the Women's World Cup Soccer tournament.

More than just an artist, Hargrove is a philanthropist at heart. His involvement in various charitable endeavors, including fundraising events for children's hospitals and inner-city youth programs, has left a lasting impact. His contributions have been recognized with invitations to present his work at significant venues, including the Pentagon and state capitals. Today, H. Hargrove remains one of America's most collected living artists, not just for his art but also for his generous spirit that inspires others.
