Despite being misunderstood and underrated during his lifetime, Vincent van Gogh, now hailed as an artistic genius, persevered in his craft.

Shortly after Vincent's death in July 1890, his brother, Theo, organized a memorial exhibition in Paris. However, he was obliged to hold the event in his home, as he couldn't get a gallery or event space to participate.

Around a hundred paintings hung in the house's various rooms for months, virtually unseen by the general public. However, other artists came to see them and – fortunately – several journalists too.

The French art critic Albert Aurier praised the expressive color and brushwork but, above all, Van Gogh's symbolic force.

These same elements – symbolism, color, and brushwork – drew the attention of young artists and continue to inspire us to this day.

It's hard to imagine modern art without Vincent van Gogh's profound influence, a testament to the significance of his contribution.

His influence on Pablo Picasso became recognizable in the mid-1960s. During this time, Picasso began painting self-portraits with many stylistic similarities to the work of the late great Van Gogh, such as the rich brush strokes and striking colors.

Henri Matisse was introduced to Van Gogh's work while bedridden with appendicitis, and it inspired his love of painting.

The Spanish artist Joan Miró was inspired by Van Gogh and another famous artist, Paul Cézanne.

Looking at some of David Hockney's work, you may notice similarities to the late French painter's pieces. This is noticeable in the brush strokes, subject matter, and color choices. "Well, sometimes I'll steal something from Van Gogh," Hockney said in 2018. I mean, I do. Good artists don't borrow; they steal."

This stunning Mixed-Media piece by Alex Ruiz incorporates Vincent's love for the stars, sunflowers, cypress trees, and small towns like Arles. And overwhelmingly, his love of symbolism.
