South Beach is the stereotype we all think of when we picture Miami. An image from films and TV of vice and gym-toned bodies with the infinite blue of the sea as a backdrop.

Part of Miami Beach, South Beach is a long stunning beach of fine sand, swaying palm trees, shallow waters, and the busiest and most popular beach in Miami.

It is also famous for the colorful Art Deco buildings that have become synonymous with this iconic destination and render it so undeniably photogenic.

It started as farmland in the late 1800s and early 1900s – specifically coconut farming due to the favorable climate. Pioneers created plantations and a small number of residential properties. The abundance of freshwater and quality land attracted more business people to the area.

Miami was experiencing a land boom during the 1920s, and many new towns and residential areas were developed throughout the region. A host of wealthy entrepreneurs constructed grand properties, and thus the reputation of "SoBe" increased.

As the wealthy and elite of Miami invested in South Beach, the neighborhood experienced an architectural boom. Recognizable styles such as Art Deco, Nautical Moderne, and Streamline Moderne were introduced.

Art Deco Miami is an architectural wonder. The city has the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings worldwide. Their preservation has saved the South Beach skyline from becoming a canyon of condos.

The buildings were initially painted white with subtle pastel trim. The candy colors came in the 80s when interior designer Leonard Horowitz devised a palette of tones to draw attention to the architecture.

Michael Young

Michael Young, born in 1952 in Kansas City, Kansas, is an American artist renowned for his evocative paintings that capture the essence of American life. His dedication to his craft was evident from a young age, inspired by his father, Eugene, who nurtured his early interest in art. At seventeen, he enrolled in a two-year Commercial Art program in Salina, Kansas, which laid the foundation for his artistic journey. After graduation, he worked at an architectural illustration studio in Kansas City, Missouri, where he honed his skills in perspective and rendering. This experience ignited a passion for fine art, leading him to open a studio/gallery in Leavenworth, Kansas.

In 1978, seeking to deepen his understanding of the human form, Young moved to New York City. He studied at the Art Students League and the Salmagundi Club and took private anatomy lessons with renowned instructor Bill Weltman. These studies enriched his ability to confidently and precisely incorporate figures into his work. Young's paintings, characterized by their nostalgic themes and intricate detail, are particularly intriguing due to his unique blend of realism and romanticism. His works have been exhibited across the United States and are included in various private and corporate collections.

Among his notable achievements, Young was commissioned to create a mural for the Kansas State Capitol, commemorating the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. This work, a testament to his commitment to capturing pivotal moments in American history through art, has left a lasting impact. Currently residing in Kansas City, Kansas, Young continues to produce art that resonates with audiences, drawing from his rich experiences and deep appreciation for the American narrative.
