Although some consider the snow globe one of the kitschiest holiday decorations, it still has the power to evoke childhood nostalgia in its many fans.

Despite their ubiquity, most people don't know where snow globes came from. However, they can be traced back to Europe at the start of the 19th century.

It's a captivating story of serendipity. An Austrian man named Erwin Perzy is believed to have stumbled upon the snow globe quite unexpectedly.

Perzy was asked by a local surgeon to improve upon Thomas Edison's lightbulb invention and make a brighter light for his operating room. Perzy placed a water-filled glass globe before a candle, which increased the light's magnification, and sprinkled semolina flakes (commonly found in baby food) inside it. The small, white particles drifting around the globe reminded Perzy of snowfall—and he quickly filed the first official patent for a snow globe or Schneekugel

Over time, the enchanting trinket made its way to America. In 1927, Joseph Garaja from Pittsburgh applied for the first snow globe patent and introduced underwater assembly. This innovation made snow globes more accessible, transforming them from a luxury into the affordable commodity we know today.

The Viennese Perzy family, with their unwavering dedication, continues to craft thousands of handmade snow globes each year.
