Ask people to describe what they associate with butterflies, and you will probably get an image of a sunny spring day with a beautiful monarch drifting gently on the cooling breeze.

Ask the same question about moths; you are likelier to be told about holes in a favorite woolen sweater. We don't view moths with the same affection as their day-flying cousins, but they still play an essential role in our lives.

The clothes-eating accusation is quite unfair. North America is home to more than 12,000 species, an astonishing number compared to our relatively paltry 800 or so butterflies, but only two will attack clothes.

Aside from their brilliant colors, moths are masters of deception and disguise. Some that are unfairly labeled as dull or drab are incognito—they look the way they do to blend in with bark, rocks, and twigs in their surroundings. Others have evolved long tails or eye spots to confuse or startle would-be predators.

Moths are not just about their colors and adaptations. They are vital in the food chain, nourishing songbirds, mammals, and other insects. They are also essential pollinators, mainly those active after dark when many other pollinating animals have settled down for the night. Their contribution to the ecosystem is genuinely remarkable.

Nocturnal moths visit more plant species than day-active bees, highlighting their importance in pollen transport. Moths have wide-ranging tastes in flowers. While some species are generalists, others have evolved to rely on a single plant or species group.

Popular collage artist Dolan Geiman created this stunning moth image, and we are thrilled he is allowing us to make it into a puzzle. It is one of his most popular art pieces. Dolan creates stunning art from found materials, created objects, and vintage papers, making many of his pieces one of a kind.

Looking closely at the Moth image, you can see constellations reflected in its colorful wings, and this is stunning proof that moths are beautiful, too.

Dolan Geiman

A nationally recognized mixed media artist, Dolan Geiman is celebrated for his unique and intricate collage works crafted from salvaged materials. His formative years in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, steeped in outdoor adventures and a deep connection to nature, continue to influence his contemporary Western creations. These include large-scale paper collages, metal wall sculptures, paintings, screenprints, and three-dimensional sculptures, all paying homage to Mother Nature and the rugged American landscape.

Geiman's artistic journey began in childhood, collecting found objects from abandoned farmsteads, sparking a lifelong fascination with vintage papers, reclaimed wood, and salvaged metal. These materials, rich with history and texture, are meticulously curated and combined using painting, screenprinting, and sculpture techniques. The result is a body of visually captivating and narratively rich work, reflecting Geiman's love for folktales, found objects, and the freedom to explore the expansive public lands of the West.

Geiman operates his studio in Denver, Colorado, with his wife and business partner, Ali Marie. Together, they travel across the United States, participating in art fairs and sourcing materials that continue to inspire Geiman's work. His art has garnered acclaim for its sustainability and ability to transform the discarded and ordinary into extraordinary pieces that resonate with nature, nostalgia, and storytelling themes.
