In January 1920, when Prohibition was introduced in the United States, alcohol was effectively banned.

The law had a huge effect. It wasn't illegal to drink liquor. You just couldn't make, buy, or move it.

An American fascination with alcohol followed. People who'd never tasted a cocktail suddenly wanted one. Cocktail parties came to symbolize high society and Jazz Age sophistication. Cocktails became a part of American culture and state of mind.

When licensed saloons and liquor-serving restaurants were closed because of the new law, illegal speakeasies soon took their place, and Americans flocked to them.

Among the wealthy, cocktails before dinner were obligatory. Diners boasted about their favorite bootleggers and talked of speakeasies and the latest liquor cabinet accessories. A cocktail shaker was the perfect gift for weddings or holidays. Drink recipes were imported from the Savoy Hotel in London and the Georges V in Paris.

Cocktails overtook Hollywood movie screens in the 1930s and during the Great Depression. Nearly every movie showed one or more characters with a stylish liquor cabinet. Just think of The Thin Man.

All that came to an end with World War II in 1941. The energy was directed toward the war effort, and companies that once made cocktail shakers now produced artillery shells.

After the war, very few people dusted off their cocktail shaker sets. They ended up in attics and closets. There, they would sit, waiting for nearly half a century to return to their rightful popularity.

Thankfully, cocktail culture is with us again. It started in 1987 with the reopening of the Rainbow Room above Rockefeller Center, launching a cocktail revival that continues to flourish. This colorful puzzle celebrates the rise of the Cocktail in all its glory. Mix something fun while you put it together.
