Sea Turtles have existed on Earth for over 100 million years, which means they once shared the planet with the dinosaurs. They migrate over vast distances between their feeding grounds across the world's oceans using the Earth's magnetic field as their compass.

They are one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivore among the different species. They are actually named for the greenish color of their cartilage and fat produced by their leafy diet.

Serving as the lawnmowers of the ocean, they graze on seagrasses and algae, maintaining the seagrass beds and making them more productive. Seagrass consumed by green turtles is quickly digested. As a result, it becomes available as recycled nutrients to the many species of plants and animals in the seagrass ecosystem.

Although they are air-breathing, they can hold their breath for over five hours underwater by slowing their heart rate to conserve oxygen. In addition, their hydrodynamic shape, large size, and powerful front flippers allow them to dive to great depths and swim long distances.

They can live to be 100, and that is roughly the number of eggs they produce each time they nest, yet few will yield hatchlings that survive their first year of life.

Their sex is determined by temperature, with warmer nests leading to more females and cooler ones producing more male babies. The males typically stay in the ocean, whereas the females return periodically to shore to lay their eggs.

The two largest remaining nesting areas for green turtles are the Caribbean coast of Central America and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. They are classified as Endangered in the United States. However, marine biologists are working hard to recover the species, especially in Hawaii.
