The frog has always been prominent in folklore. Once a symbol of fertility, to the ancient Egyptians, greeks and romans, it has since become a figure of fun.
The Celts believed frogs had curative and cleansing powers. Early Christian tradition linked their three stages of development with the Trinity, spiritual enlightenment, and resurrection.
Across various belief systems, frogs are associated with positive attributes. In Buddhism, they are symbols of good luck, while in Hinduism, they are believed to have command over the functioning of the Earth. These positive associations with frogs can bring a sense of optimism and good fortune.
In Chinese tradition, a frog image placed in an east-facing window encouraged childbirth and happy family life. In Japan, the frog offered good fortune, and because it was pronounced similarly to the word for return, travelers carried frog amulets to ensure they got home safely.
No creature bestrode world faiths and cultures more than the frog as they hopped through history.
Aesop featured frogs in five fables. The Brothers Grimm adopted the old German legend of the princess and the frog, restored to princely status with a kiss, a storyline picked up by Disney.
Human-frog love has a long, rich history. The amphibians generally mean us no harm; they come in gorgeous hues, and that bug-eyed baby face can be ugly and cute. They even sing. It's no wonder that so many people collect Froggy items.
