For many adults, snow days are steeped in nostalgia. If you had a childhood where a day off from school was a day off from everything, a snow day was pure in a way that nothing will ever be again as an adult. The feeling that snow brings up may be about returning to that cherished childhood memory.

But many adults who have never experienced snow days as children love them too. On a snow day, some people complain about the snow. Mainly those who still have to get to work through it. But many more people are enchanted by it, or at least by the first few hours when it is still clean and magical.

You may still love it even if you must trudge to work through the snow or shovel it from your driveway. Being among the few people on the streets is magical when it is snowing.

Snow days are a unique combination of the unworldly and the mundane. Streets paved with glittering snowflakes and boots filled with slush. The joy that snow offers might be because its charm has nothing to do with usefulness. Snow is an excuse to focus on beauty instead of productivity and adventure instead of effort. There isn't a logical connection between the weather and the relief, except we want an excuse to pause our lives. A snow day is the opposite of dutiful busyness. A day when no one is expected to get anything done. The world looks beautiful, and that's enough.

For adults, snow days are heavenly permission to rest and chill out, and this nostalgic wooden jigsaw puzzle is the perfect item to bring out and relax with. Hot cocoa is the perfect accompaniment!

Ronald Lampitt

Ronald Lampitt (1906–1988) was a British artist and illustrator renowned for his evocative depictions of rural England and his significant contributions to mid-20th-century visual culture. Born in Worcester, Lampitt was largely self-taught, having been denied formal art education at the Slade School by his father, who encouraged him to pursue a more conventional career path. Undeterred, Lampitt embarked on a successful career as a commercial illustrator, producing work for prominent publications such as John Bull, Reader's Digest, and Look and Learn. During World War II, he served in military intelligence, a role that may have honed the precision evident in his later topographical illustrations.

Lampitt's artistic legacy is perhaps most enduringly associated with his work for Ladybird Books, where his illustrations brought to life educational titles like Understanding Maps and What to Look for Inside a Church. His collaboration with his brother-in-law, journalist Henry James Deverson, further enriched his portfolio, combining Lampitt's visual artistry with Deverson's textual narratives. Beyond book illustrations, Lampitt's artistry extended to railway posters and landscape paintings, capturing the idyllic charm of the English countryside with remarkable detail and warmth.

Throughout his career, Lampitt's work was characterized by a unique blend of romanticism and meticulous detail in his portrayal of rural life. His illustrations, often featuring vibrant colors and intricate patterns, served educational purposes and offered a nostalgic glimpse into a vanishing pastoral England. Today, his artworks continue to be celebrated for their historical significance and artistic merit, with pieces held in private collections and featured in art auctions.
